The Breed

Matt: "None of this makes any sense."
Noah: "I know!"
Matt: "There's no way a dog can act like this."

release year: 2006
genre: wild dog horror
viewing setting: home Bluray 8/12/22 and 12/2/18 and home DVD, 9/22/07

synopsis: Five friends journey to a remote island to party...but find a pack of vicious wild dogs instead.

impressions: This was a pretty good animal monster movie, even though it resorted to the "genetically-altered" excuse to explain the dogs' behavior. I would have just chalked it up to the animals being on the island for a long time and becoming wild. Anyway, this was a simple movie, with a few basic sets (house, garage, dock) and five human actors. It was quite entertaining, though I question certain characters' behavior in certain situations. When you've just barely survived an attack by wild animals who you know can still get into the house at any time, you should never proceed to find more booze and get drunk and play old records. Oh well...you can probably guess what ended up happening to that character.

something this movie has that no other movie has: A pack of dogs trashing a house after driving the humans up into the attic.

acting: Michelle Rodriguez was the tough hero-chick type, climbing and riding ziplines and generally being manly. Eric Lively was the younger of the two brothers, who's also her boyfriend and in vet school (and that knowledge comes in handy during the events of this movie.) Oliver Hudson was the older brother who generally screws everything up, but is as good at fighting the dogs as anyone. Hill Harper was an obnoxious party animal who shouldn't have lasted as long as he did.

final word: Good wild animal horror movie.
