The Host

release year: 2006
genre: giant animal horror
viewing setting: home Bluray 10/27/21

synopsis: A weird monster steals a little girl, and her father, his siblings, and their father must try and get her back.

impressions: Overrated. The monster was cool (especially in its first scene, where it runs amok chasing people all over the place) but the rescue party was slow and bumbling at times, and there were some logic questions (why did the monster eat some victims but leave others? How did one character survive a certain medical procedure?) Add to that a downbeat ending, and this just didn't seem as great as it was hyped up to be.

acting: Song Kang-Ho is the lazy, dim-witted father. Byun Hee-bong is the grandfather who mobilizes his three children to rescue his granddaughter. Go Ah-sung is that kid, whose capture/imprisonment by the monster provides much of the tension. Bae Doo-na is the sister/archer.

final word: Worth seeing once, but in my opinion it's only worth a one-time viewing.
