The Keep

release year: 1983
genre: horror
viewing setting: home VHS, 10/24/98
what I expected: wasn't sure
what I got: vaguely interesting Satan story

synopsis: It's 1941, and some Nazis are assigned to guard an abandoned keep in Romania. They soon find, however, that it's not as empty as they thought...

impressions: Decent, but the pacing seemed to be off in parts. Also, the dialogue was mumbled in many cases, and it was hard to figure out the minute details of what was going on. Still, I got the basic idea, and the core plot was worthwhile. I think they could have implemented it a little better - not enough characters were asking questions and questioning what was happening around them.

acting: Average. Scott Glenn and Gabriel Byrne and Ian McKlellan all turned in decent performances.

final word: As horror, not too scary, but it has some interesting ideas. Worth seeing, once.

rating: C
