The Virtuoso

release year: 2021
genre: drama
viewing setting: home DVD 8/21/21

synopsis: A troubled assassin has some trouble with his latest assignment.

impressions: It started off pretty well, but then degenerated. The whole "this is how an assassin thinks" aspect was cool, but then he started getting vague directions about what he was supposed to do - which in his line of work, can lead to big problems. I cannot buy into the idea of the target being unclear, such that the assassin has to guess and do detective work. And then it turns into a mystery, except that instead of trying to figure out who killed someone, he (and the audience) is trying to figure out who he's supposed to kill. He starts making mistakes, which leads to problems.

acting: Anson Mount is the lonely, cautious main character. Abbie Cornish is a waitress who he befriends. Anthony Hopkins is his scheming assignment-giver who seems to be masterminding something (perhaps having a few minutes of dialogue to collect a paycheck.)

final word: Good premise, but I'd have rather seen the main character do more assignments, instead of having to figure out what the current assignment is.
