Tulsa King, season 1 (2022-23)

release year: 2022-23
genre: crime drama
viewing setting: home streaming 10/9-10/24

synopsis: After 25 years in prison, a former mob boss is released and then exiled to Tulsa...where he does what he knows best.

impressions: I'd been wondering about this, and finally I checked it out...and watched the entire first season in the span of two days. The main character has three things going on here. First, he's trying to make sense of the world which is nothing like what he knew when he was last in it. Second, he's trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Third, he's trying to build power in his new home. There are funny bits, but also serious ones; he basically won't take shit from anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this.

acting: Sylvester Stallone is the main character, who I've described above. Jay Will is the young man who ends up being his driver and trying to make something of himself. Max Casella is an old associate who just happens to be in Tulsa already. Garrett Hedlund is a bar owner who becomes a strong ally. Martin Starr is a pothead who's got more going on than you'd think. Domenick Lombardozzi is the underboss back in New York, whose issues with temper and stupidity gradually become more apparent. Ritchie Coster is the Irish leader of a biker gang and a pretty bad guy. Andrea Savage is a federal agent who becomes involved with the main character. Dana Delany is another possible love interest. Jonathan Joss is a big, mean Indian who only had a couple of lines across nine episodes, but is badass and funny at the same time.

final word: Great fun crime drama.
