U-571

release year: 2000
genre: drama/action
viewing setting: theater, 5/13/2000
what I expected: no idea
what I got: Pretty tense sub/war movie

synopsis: During WWII, an Allied mission to get a coding machine from a German sub goes bad, and the few survivors must use the U-boat to get back.

impressions: Lots of depth charges and other underwater drama/action. Fairly entertaining, though I had to wonder why it took them so long to eliminate the German prisoner who caused so much trouble.

acting: Pretty good. Matthew McConaughey played a fairly serious young captain; Harvey Keitel was the crusty old chief who had to keep the young ones in line.

final word: Good war/action/drama movie, worth seeing.

rating: C+
