Wrestlemania VI

release year: 1990
genre: vintage wrestling pay-per-view
viewing setting: home DVD, 9/9/12

synopsis: This sixth annual wrestling mega-event featured, among other matches, Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior - each holding one belt/title - facing off in a contest of champions.

where it happened: Toronto

impressions: As previously, I won't go into great detail, but rather mention some highlights. The wrestlers were brought ot the ring in motorized carts, just like in WM II. Mean Gene Okerlund made fun of Bobby "the Brain" Heenan's Colossal Connection by nonchalantly calling them the "Colostomy Connection." Andre the Giant attacked his manager Heenan after a match. Earthquake dropped the atomic butt on an opponent three times, two after the match had ended. Brutus "the Barber" Beefcake cut some dork's hair. Roddy Piper came out with half of his body blacked-out in black paint. Jesse Ventura made fun of "Chico" Santana and trips to Mexico. Dusty Rhodes was hugely entertaining both dancing and fighting against Randy Savage, and each had a female tag-team partner; Dusty also had Miss Elizabeth in his corner, which was quite a suprise for Savage. Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannety had a great acrobatic match which they lost. The Honkytonk Man and Greg "the Hammer" Valentine sang a horrible song. Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka made fun of Rick Rude's posing before ultimately losing to him. Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior had their big match, and it was both lengthy and great, with each winning and losing contests of strength and hulking up from certain defeat more than once. Warrior eventually won, and Hogan shook his hand and congratulated him in the ring afterward. Celebrities on hand for this one (in addition to any already mentioned above) were Mary Tyler Moore and Steve Allen.

fun quote #1: Jesse Ventura: "That's the pressure of wrestling in Wrestlemania...the world is watching...everyone is watching."

fun quote #2: Jesse Ventura: "Anytime you go for a move where you don't see your opponent, you risk some heavy trouble."

fun quote #3: Steve Allen: "I like Jimmy Snuka because he's wearing my wife's underwear."

final word: This one lacked new ideas but had some interesting matchups; like the previous five, it's a must-see for fans of this sort of entertainment.
