synopsis: A misdelivered corpse soon emits a small but deadly stowaway that gets bigger and stronger as it eats more people.

impressions: This was a goofy but fun monster movie with a great deal of jokes and humor. As I said, the spider starts out fairly small but soon gets out of control - by the final third of the movie, it's kicking cars out of the way and climbing skyscrapers. One particularly memorable scene has it scuttling through a big park spearing a whole bunch of fleeing people with its pointed legs, then wrapping them up in webs. There's some sort of subplot about how it was the result of alien DNA from Mars spliced with normal spiders, but who cares? People watch movies like this for the mayhem caused by a gigantic monster running amok.

acting: Greg Grunberg hams it up as a blue-collar exterminator who ends up thrown into all this. Lombardo Boyar is a hospital security guard who becomes his sidekick in the effort to find and fight the spider. Clare Kramer is a military officer who helps and is helped by them. Ray Wise is the leader of the mostly-ineffective military, but plays it mostly straight.

final word: Fairly entertaining killer-spider-that-becomes-a-giant-spider movie.
