synopsis: The Loch Ness monster shows up at some lake, and it's up to a variety of people to work together to stop it..
impressions: There's a 1976 prologue scene which establishes one of the main characters in the present time, and it really sets the tone: there's a big-ass monster and it's really aggressive. Thankfully, this movie's events take place entirely in daytime hours, which meant that we could actually see what was happening (not like the other Loch Ness monster movie we watched today.) The monster seemed to be done with a mix of CGI and actual physical effects, and looked pretty good. It was also savage - it tries to kill and eat anyone it came across, no negotiations, no bullshit. It also has the ability to walk on land, which ups the body count. There is a decent amount of blood and gore, and a bunch of characters to either fight it or get eaten or both. Some other elements: a stupid guy who's more interested in taking its picture than avoiding being eaten by it...a guy fighting the monster with fireworks...baby monsters...some high-tech weaponry like somnar and EMP guns...a teenager who has a bad habit of knocking himself out...the presence of magnetite as a plot device.

acting: Brian Krause is good as the tough, seasoned monster hunter. Niall Matter is a young guy, Amber Borycki is his ex who he still likes, Sebastian Stewart is the jackass new boyfriend. Carrie Genzel is the main kid's mom, who's also the sheriff. Donnely Rhodes is the crazy uncle. Movie veteran Don Davis is a deputy who's having a hard time believing all this.
final word: Good, entertaining, well-made monster movie.
