Primitive War
"You need to get your shit together, because we're doing what you want. And we're probably all going to die screaming because of it." - Baker
release year: 2025
genre: military monster mayhem
viewing setting: home streaming 6/25/26
synopsis: In 1968 Vietnam, an American special forces team deals with Russian and Vietnamese enemies as well as dinosaurs that are there because of a wormhole created by experiments gone wrong.
impressions: That one sentence says so much, doesn't it? And here's the thing: this movie was really well-made and never seemed cheesy (which, given the amount of raw cinematic cheese I tend to watch, is really saying something.) This was basically the result of putting Predator and Kong: Skull Island and Jurassic Park into a blender and making a movie out of the contents of the mixer...and it was actually well-paced, -executed, and -acted while also having good special effects. A pleasant surprise for sure.
acting: Due to the mostly-dark lighting/scenes and the fast-moving action, it was hard to distinguish different actors most of the time. Ryan Kwanten was the leader of the team, and did a good job as a serious and competent officer. Jeremy Piven played a real asshole of a colonel, and he played it well. Tricia Helfer was the lone Russian scientist survivor who ended up helping.
final word: Better-than-average dinosaur action film, well worth seeing.
