Snake Creek
"It's a snake. It's always mad. Mad and hungry." - Patrick
release year: 2025
genre: monster horror/drama
viewing setting: home streaming 7/22/26
synopsis: Four friends head deep into the wilderness for a canoe trip, but instead find a big snake and the degenerate backwoods family who consider it their special pet.
impressions: This was simple: only eight people, one non-CGI monster, and lots of talking and arguing and poor decisions. It toed the line between serious monster movie and total cheese, but at least there were no flying or growling snakes. It did have elements of Deliverance at times, but thankfully not too much. I have to mention the tight shorts and colored socks that the four friends wore - that, along with their general lack of equipment and wilderness skills, makes one wonder why they went on this trip at all. One thing that kept happening: the final fate of someone was not shown. This happened when someone came face-to-face with the snake, and again when someone was dragged away by it, and again when one character was left tied to a chair but clearly alive. Kind of sloppy if you ask me.
body count: 6, assuming that no one came back to life
acting:
At times, I enjoy using an alternate format for this part...and this is one of those times. Here is the complete cast of characters in this one:
Patrick - Leader of the four friends, asshole, supposedly possesses outdoor skills. Drinks lots of beer as he drives them to the river. Wears sandals into the wilderness. Shoots the snake's eggs for no apparent reason, then accidentally shoots Bill in the arm, so his marksmanship is inconsistent. Kind of dense when it comes to realizing that the degenerate hillbillies aren't going to help his friends. Not a good tactician (lets himself get trapped in an old bus) or fighter (lets himself get captured by a guy with only one good arm, and doesn't even struggle.) Tortured but not killed, fate unknown.
Bill - The worried one, quiet, gets picked on. Has weak stomach and pukes after finding human remains in snake nest. Later has a weird bad dream by the campfire. Eventually becomes a motivated, efficient killer of evil degenerate hillbillies (while opera music plays in the background.) Also mysteriously gains wilderness skills, building a trap that helps him catch and kill the snake. Apparent sole survivor.
Kevin - Friend #3, long-haired. Gets bitten early on and becomes even more useless. Later gets bitten in the ankle and then in the crotch, and presumably dies.
James - Friend #4, taken away in first snake attack and never seen again.
Woody - The main evil degenerate hillbilly. Has only a few teeth, runs a store, not very friendly, descended from circus freaks and likes to tell that story. Not too bright - scratches his back with a rusty machete at one point. Eventually gets batted aside by the snake's tail and falls, impaling himself on a random tree branch.
Elmer aka "wilderness Beavis" - Second degenerate, has long hair and a useless right arm. Ends up shot to death by an angry Bill.
Belial aka "wilderness Butt-Head" - Third degenerate, fat and older with white hair. Ends up axed to death by an angry Bill.
Willow - Missing person, past victim of snake, appears in its nest and is apparently killed.
Clovis - Long-dead grandfather of the degenerate family, ran the circus freakshow, mentioned by the modern-day villains during their storytelling.
the snake - aka "Gwendolyn" to the hillbillies, it's a product of practical effects not CGI. Has a tendency to pop up and hiss at people before attacking. Also likes to drop rotted severed heads of old victims near new victims before attacking. Drools a lot while stalking prey. Said to enjoy eating human flesh. Absorbs multiple knife-blows before finally dying.
final word: Decent effort at backwoods monster horror, with some entertaining moments.
