The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Clemens: "Why London?"
Anna: "Because in my country, there is no one left to feed on."

release year: 2023
genre: horror
viewing setting: home Bluray 12/13/23

synopsis: In a chapter from the 1897 story, the ship carrying Dracula to London has a doomed voyage.

impressions: So this is the story of the ship that carried Dracula and his coffins and earth from Romania to London...and the crew unfortunate enough to be on board. It's kind of interesting to watch, knowing the outcome (the vampire makes it to London and proceeds to expand his power base there) but it's still good...dark, creepy, and scary. This is no romanticized vampire tale - this monster rips out throats and gorges on gushing blood. It certainly doesn't help the crew that they have no idea what they're dealing with, or how to stop it.

acting: Corey Hawkins is the educated doctor who has to prove himself, both to his blue-collar shipmates and then in conflict with Dracula. Aisling Franciosi is the intended vampire food who escapes that fate and ends up helping. Liam Cunningham is the old captain of the ship. David Dastmalchian is the first mate, who handles the day-to-day running of the ship. Woody Norman is a young lad who sometimes has less sense than Barry from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

final word: Fine addition to the Dracula film collection.
