Never Hike Alone

release year: 2017
genre: horror
viewing setting: home streaming 4/14/25

synopsis: A hiker/Youtuber heads into some wilderness, and ends up at Camp Crystal Lake (which isn't quite as abandoned as it first appears.)

impressions: So this is the first in a series of Friday the 13th fan-made films by a certain creative team (Womp Stomp Films.) It clocks in at 54 minutes and is mostly the story of this one guy hiking, finding the old camp, and then fighting (or running from) killer Jason Voorhees. Overall, it was pretty good - the camera work, acting, and pacing were a lot like the earlier and better movies in the Paramount series. I did question a few things, such as the early appearance of Jason right next to the protagonist immediately followed by him vanishing. Also, the ending was a little confusing. Still, this had a Jason who moved fast, was aggressive, and was also the undead version (who debuted in part 6.) Oh, and it also had a throwback cameo at the end!.

acting: Drew Leighty is the hiker, who has a fair amount of survival skills and will to live. Vincente DiSanti (the director) is also the man behind the mask, and plays Jason as deadly serious.

final word: Good fan-made short Friday the 13th film, worth watching.
